REMEMBER NOVEMBER!
Here's a look at what's in store for you in this issue:
TOPPER'S PIZZA
Our cover story focuses on a 32-unit chain ready to double in size by the end of next year. Keith Toppazzini and his brother Kelly, co-presidents of Topper's Pizza, are aimed at growing their family's business even bigger with the inception of the franchisee Performance Improvement Center. They are striving to have half of their new franchisees open a second store by the end of their first year. Turn to page 52 to see how they are tipping their hats to growth through performance.
Cheese Price Update
The Canadian Dairy Commission's decision on whether to raise or lower the price of industrial milk (used to make cheese) is coming up in December. Some new developments including a reopening of the U.S. border to cattle trade and plummeting cheese prices in the United States may affect this decision. Turn to page 16 to read our update on the issue.
Slice of Life
Location is important in a restaurant's overall business plan, but Laurie Freisinger, owner of Slice of Life Café in Duncan, B.C., has made a less-than-ideal location work for her business. Read about how she's taken her tiny 16-seat pizzeria and turned it into a destination on page 58.
Super Fast Pizza
Wouldn't it be nice to bring delivery times down to 15 minutes from bake to finish? Scott Matthew, owner of Super Fast Pizza in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, has perfected a pizzeria on wheels. Read about how you might see mobile pizzerias coming to a town near you in the near future on page 60.
Pizza Cruise
Get your passports and sunscreen ready! PMQ is hosting a pizza cruise. Yes, that's right. We're holding a pizza industry summit on the blue waters of the Caribbean January 22-29, 2006. Come soak up some sun and mingle with other pizzeria industry professionals aboard Carnival Cruise Line's Conquest. The cruise boasts seminars from Tom Lehmann, the Dough Doctor, Big Dave Ostrander, The Pizza Doctor, a Pizza Trivia night, performances by the U.S. Pizza Team, a Think & Drink roundtable discussion reception, exotic pizza excursions and much, much more. See the details at www.pizzacruise.com. All aboard for the Pizza Cruise!
